We've Been Here Before (and Have Pictures to Prove It)
A couple years ago Reason magazine, the libertarian monthly,
dedicated an issue to immigration. The essays focused on the various
political, economic and social arguments informing today's raucous
debate. But what really recommended the issue were the half-dozen
vintage late-19th and early-20th century illustrations that accompanied
the text. The images, all more than 100 years old, were culled from
long-forgotten political periodicals like Judge and the Wasp, and they
add a welcome historical context to the current national discussion
about America's most recent arrivals. Three of the cartoons are
reprinted below (click on the images to enlarge them). They provide a taste
of what America-bound Asians and Europeans faced a century ago.
