Raised in the suburban wilds of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Peter Stark comes from a family with an adventurous streak. His father crewed aboard the last commercial windjammer to sail around Cape Horn; his mother is a lifelong hiker and skier with ancestral roots in the Swiss Alps. A onetime downhill ski racer, Stark has written about his misguided attempts to be a competitive ski jumper and to steer a luge sled down the Olympic track in Lake Placid. He is a longtime contributor to Outside magazine and has chronicled his travels to the Arctic and Tibet for Smithsonian and The New Yorker. Stark is also the author of a collection of essays about the Arctic called Driving to Greenland and is the editor of Ring of Ice, an anthology of Arctic literature. He lives in Missoula, Montana, with his wife, dancer and choreographer Amy Ragsdale, and their two children, Molly and Skyler.
