Gerald Durrell
This is a rather old-fashioned reference. Durrell (1925-1995) was a younger brother of the more famous novelist/travel writer Lawrence Durrell. A gifted amateur naturalist as a child, he became a scientifically trained professional devoted to wildlife preservation. He was a bon vivant, a heavy drinker, and reputedly a very funny guy. Durrell wrote 37 bestsellers, including My Family and Other Animals; The Ark's Anniversary; The Aye Aye and I; and The Whispering Land. He named one of his dogs Puke.
